Shimla | Thursday, May 15 2008 IST

Himachal Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Manisha Nanda today said that polling for the by-elections to Hamirpur Parliamentary Constituency in the state would be held from 0800 to 1700 hrs on May 22. To ensure free, fair and peaceful elections, all arrangements have been made and movement of polling parties with Police and Home Guard Personnel would start from May 20 to their assigned polling stations, she said in a release here.

Ms Nanda said the state government has declared May 22 (Thursday) as Gazetted Holiday in the areas falling in Hamirpur constituency to enable the employees working in all government offices, boards, corporations, educational institutions and industrial establishments situated in its areas to exercise their franchise.

This will be a paid holiday to daily wages employees also within the meaning of Section 25 of Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, she added.

It has been clarified by State Government that special casual leave/maximum facilities may be given to those employees who are working in different places in the state but have a right to vote in other constituencies/places in the state on the production of certificate from the concerned presiding officer that the employee has actually cast his vote.

The CEO said that similar type of instructions have also been issued by the State Labour Commissioner for grant of paid holiday on the day of poll to every person employed in any business, trade, industrial undertakings or any other establishment in the state.
