Cong demands dismissal on Badal government
Amritsar | Thursday, May 15 2008 IST

Alleging large-scale violence and rigging in the just concluded Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) today demanded dismissal of the SAD-BJP government and imposition of President's Rule in the state.

''The extent of the violence and rigging can be gauged from the fact that the Akalis did not even spare its coalition partner, the BJP,'' PPCC chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said after presiding over a meeting of the partys MLAs here.

Addressing mediapersons, she said that the PPCC would be meeting the President of India, the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the Chief Election Commissioner to apprise them of the manner in which the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had made a mockery of democracy in Punjab. She said that the party would demand the Punjab governments dismissal and imposition of President's Rule.

She demanded that central forces should be deployed for Amritsar South Assembly by-polls to be held on May 22. She also demanded that para military forces should be deployed for the May 26 panchayat elections.

Earlier the PPCC leadership along with the MLAs took a pledge at the historic Jallianwala Bagh to fight the undemocratic politics of the SAD-BJP government.

Mrs Bhattal has summoned another meeting of the party legislaters on May 17. Meanwhile the party issued a stern warning to former MLA Harjinder Singh Thakedar and asked him to join the party campaign for the Amritsar South by-election. Mr Thakedar who has kept away from the campaign represented this constituency in the last Vidhan Sabha but was denied the ticket for the by-poll.
