Mahroof leads Delhi to set target of 157 for Rajasthan Royals
Jaipur | Sunday, May 11 2008 IST

A late rearguard action by Pervez Mahroofwho made 39 off 16 balls led Delhi Daredevils set a target of 157 for Rajasthan Royals in their second round IPL cricket tie at the SMS stadium here tonight.

Asked to bat first, Delhi were placed in a bad shape by the dismal performance of their top order batsmen as they had made 100 for 6 only in 15.5 overs. At this juncture, Mahroof took command of the situation and in company with his country mate Dilshan blasted 27 runs in the penultimate over bowled by skipper and ace leg spinner Sahne Warne to put up a fighting total on the board.

Prior to this, Rajasthan Royals bowlers-particulary D Mascarenhas-playing his first match replacing Sohail Tanvir and Siddarth Trivedi bowled extremely well with each taking two wickets. Shane Watson, however, took the prize wicket of dangerous opener and skipper Virendra Sehwag caught by Kaif for only 17 off 20 balls with two fours. Trivedi gave another jolt to Delhi when he bowled the highest scorer of the tournament Gautam Gambhir for 31 off 23 balls consisting of four fours.

Mascrenhas broke the back bone of Delhi when he picked up two wickets of AB Villiers for 20 and Dinesh Karthik for 13 in his one over. Earlier to this, S Dhawan was run out for only 3.

When it looked that Delhi would be restricted to a paltry score, Maharoof and Dilshan turned the table hitting 27 runs in the 19th over bowled by Shane Warne. Maharoof hit 3 sixes and Dilshan clouted one six in the over to take Delhi to a fighting total. On the third ball of last over bowled by Watson Maharoof skied a catch for Munaf Patel. He made 39 off 16 balls with two fours and four sixes.

Dilshan returned unbeaten on 18 off 15 balls with one four and one six. Dimitri Mascarenhas took 2 for 29, Watson 2 for 21 and Siddartha Trivedi 2 for 28.
