TN eyes 25 pc share in ICT production by 2011

Tamil Nadu would create 30 lakh additional jobs in the next three years and aspires to capture 25 per cent share of the country's total ICT production by 2011 from the present 11 per cent, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin announced in the State Assembly today. Moving the demand for grants for IT department, he said the new IT policy-2008 was evolved with a vision to make Tamil Nadu the ICT hub of South Asia by creating a knowledge-driven eco-system, leveraging entrepreneurship and promoting socially inclusive growth to achieve a 25 per cent production share of the Indian ICT industry by 2011.

''Achieving this vision will create a total of 0.8 million direct jobs (ICT services is estimated to employ around 0.7 million people, while ICT manufacturing is estimated to employ close to 0.1 million people by 2011) and 2.2 million indirect jobs,'' the Minister said.

''The policy aims at creating approximately three million additional jobs by 2011,'' Mr Stalin said, adding that the State Government was committed not only to sustain the growth momentum, but also to accelerate it to ensure that Tamil Nadu reaped the twin benefits of economic prosperity and increased employment.

Observing that Tamil Nadu continued to register remarkable progress in the IT sector, he said software exports from the State were expected to cross Rs 28,000 crore in 2007-08 from Rs 20,700 crore in 2006-07.
