Militant killed in Sopore gunfight
Srinagar | November 10, 2007 10:05:06 PM IST

Security forces Saturday evening stormed the hotel building in the heart of the apple rich north Kashmir Sopore town, where militants were holed up for the past three days and shot one of them dead.

"One militant has been eliminated in the encounter at hotel New Light in Sopore. However, exchange of fire is still taking place," said a police spokesman here.

He said paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police stormed the building following fierce firing.

"The operation is in the final stages and may conclude anytime tonight (Saturday). We will neutralize the other holed up militant whom we have cornered," a senior police officer said.

The gunfight in Sopore town in Baramulla district 54 km from here erupted Thursday when guerrillas made an abortive attempt to storm a CRPF camp.

In the initial attack a trooper was killed and five security men were wounded.

CRPF and SOG immediately surrounded the hotel building and engaged the militants in a sustained gunfight.

"Inspector general of police Kashmir zone, S.M. Sahai is on the spot to ensure that no collateral damage or any civilian casualty takes place during the gunfight," the police spokesman said. (IANS)
