Legendary Music Director O P Nayyar passes away Mumbai | January 29, 2007 4:56:28 PM IST
Legendary music composer O P Nayyar, who made a mark for himself in the Hindi film industry with his distinctive style and melody, died of cardiac arrest in Thane, near here, this afternoon. The 50s and the 60s saw many stalwarts like S D Burman, Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, Roshan, Salil Choudhary, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan and others ruling the film music. But, Nayyar stood out due to his characteristic music compositions. He is most remembered for the clip-clop sound created by the hooves of horses galloping in 'Naya Daur'. He also brought the folk and the lilt of modernity in perfect sync with each other. His rhythm and inimitable brand of music remains unparalleled. He celebrated his 81st birthday on January 16. Nayyar lived as a paying guest with Naqva family in Thane for the last 13 years and had severed ties with his own family in Mumbai. Nayyar's lawyer Prashant Pankashree told UNI that the Naqva family looked after Nayyar well and he considered Naqvas' daughter Rani as his own. Prashant said Nayyar breathed his last at around 1530 hrs. ''He was in a happy and jovial mood as he had his breakfast, lunch and watched television. He got up to go to the bathroom where he slipped and died,'' he added. The funeral will take place in Thane later in the evening, Mr Prashant added. The legend created unforgettable songs as 'Ello main hari piya' ( Aar Paar), 'Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana ( C I D),' Maang Ke Saath Tumhara' (Naya Daur ), 'Aaiye meherban baithiye jaanejaan' (Howrah Bridge), 'Zara holle holle challo more sajna' (Sawan Ki Ghata), ' Chain se humko kabhi' ( Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye). He won the Filmfare Award in 1957 for Naya Daur. UNI MR MJ HS GC1926
