Truck plunges into Ganga, two killed Patna | December 30, 2006 5:43:27 PM IST
A truck plunged into Ganga after the driver lost control over the vehicle while passing through Mahatma Gandhi bridge connecting Patna with Hajipur at 0600 hours today. Senior Superintendent of Police Kundan Krishnan said that the driver and the helper of the ill-fated truck were feared killed although no deadbody could be fished out from the spot or downstream of the turbulent river as yet. The truck, however, was retrieved using heavy duty crane and it was yet to be ascertained whether any person other than the driver and the helper was aboard the truck,he added. Due to lack of visibility for early morning fog, the truck rammed into the railings of the bridge, crashed the barrier and jumped into the river 80 feet below, Mr Krishnan maintained. Retrieval of the truck set at rest the confusion in police and administratives circles of Vaishali and Patna districts about the type of the vehicle, which plunged into Ganga, official sources said. Earlier in the morning civil officials as well as police teams rushed from both Hajipur and Patna on the basis of unconfirmed reports that a bus carrying 40-50 people from Hajipur Railway station to Patna had jumped the railings of the bridge leading to watery grave of the passengers.
