UGC Onto 19 Fake Universities: MoS

As many as 19 ''fake'' universities and such institutions have been detected by the University Grants Commission across the country, Parliament was told today.

The Commission has filed cases against the ''status and conduct of some of these universities,'' Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandareswari said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

She said that concerned State Chief Secretaries and District Superintendents of Police have been requested to register complaints against such institutions and have them investigated.

Authorities have also been requested to prosecute those defrauding and cheating students by misrepresenting themselves as 'Universities' and awarding degrees using the word 'University' or 'Vishwavidyalaya' in their names.

She said no data or information about students in fake universities is maintained nor any grants given to any fake educational institution.

The Commission gives grants to only such Universities and Colleges as are recognised under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, she said.

Daryaganj, Delhi 04 Delhi - United Nations University, Delhi.

05 Delhi - Vocational University, Delhi.
