Dharam Singh demands funds for Tungabhadra canal repair work
Gulbarga | October 28, 2006 4:37:28 PM IST

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly N Dharam Singh today demanded that the Government release funds for carrying out repair works of the Tungabhadra canals as per the recommendations of the Chinaver Committee.

Addressing a press meet here, he said a five-member Expert Committee, led by Mr Chinaver, was constituted during his regime to recommend works on the Tungabhadra canals. The Committee had submitted its report, recommending taking up of works at a cost of Rs 841 crore. The Tungabhadra right canal was in bad shape and repair work had to be carried out immediately, he added.

Mr Singh suggested that a corporation specifically to carry out irrigation works ought to be set up to avoid sub-standard works and delay in carrying out works.

He felt that it was imperative on the part of the Government to bring the Tungabhadra project under the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited for its proper maintenance.

Congratulating the police for arresting two militants in Mysore, Mr Singh said terrorist activists should be dealt with firmly, but said there was no need to revive the POTA.

Criticising the Government for effecting school fee hike, he alleged that the Government's policy of distributing cycles and hiking school fees clearly reflected its double standards.
