Madhya Pradesh to celebrate golden jubilee Bhopal | October 17, 2006 4:15:06 PM IST
Madhya Pradesh is all set to mark its golden jubilee in style with weeklong celebrations starting Oct 30. "Cultural programmes would be held at different venues throughout the week here. They would include classical and folk dances, Qawwali, Ghazals and a Kavi Sammelan (poetry reading session)," said Laxmikant Sharma, the state's culture minister. There will be concerts by flautist Ronu Majumdar, Ghazal singer Talat Aziz, Classical vocalist Parveen Sultana and Sarod artist Vishwajit Roy Choudhary, he added. Bollywood actress and dancer Hema Malini is also likely to perform a dance ballet "Draupadi" with her 45-member troupe. The state was carved out on Nov 1, 1956, following the merger of the states of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal. Bhopal became the new capital of the state. However, the state's southeastern portion broke away in November 2000 to form the new state of Chhattisgarh. (IANS)
