Kerala minister leaves official residence Thiruvananthapuram | October 09, 2006 9:15:06 PM IST
Facing criticism for spending a huge amount to renovate his government bungalow, Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran Monday decided to pack his bags and return to his own home. "The media report that a sum of more than a million rupees was spent to renovate the bungalow has not gone down well with my party rank and file and hence I feel it is proper on my part to return to my own home in the city itself," Divakaran told reporters here. "I have nothing to do with the renovation because it was done by the general administration department and I never gave any suggestion. I have already asked the concerned department to conduct an inquiry into the matter because I have not caused any loss to the exchequer." Before media reports, the issue was raised on the floor of the assembly last month when, in reply to a query, it was found out that Divakaran's bungalow was renovated at a cost of Rs.1.1 million. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's official residence was also renovated at a staggering cost of Rs.1.7 million. Meanwhile, it was found that half a million rupees were spent on refurbishing Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy's official residence. Chandy too has sought an inquiry into the issue. (IANS)
