Mizoram to go for bypoll on Oct 30
Aizawl | October 03, 2006 10:32:42 AM IST

The Election Commission (EC) of India has fixed October 30 for the byelection to Chawngte and Tlungvel seats in the state.

Besides Mizoram, a few other states will also go for byelection on this day.

The election notification will be issued on October 6 and thereafter the election model code of conduct will come into effect, said the EC officials here.

Last date for filing of nomination is October 13, while scrutiny of nomination would be held the following day.

With only a few days left for last date of nomination filing, no political party in Mizoram has announced its bypoll candidates, except for Zoram Nationalist Party, which had fielded Lalngova for Chawngte seat.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram People’s Conference is likely to announce their candidates on Monday, according to party vice-president Col Lalchungnunga.

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and its ally Mizoram Congress Party have made it clear that the alliance would remain in the coming byelections.

However, the MNF party had not held a meeting on the byelections due to the party president and Chief Minister Zoramthanga's illness.
