Congress party legislators to hold meeting in Pondicherry Pondicherry | May 13, 2006 10:07:32 AM IST
The Members of Legislative Assembly of the Congress party have today convened a meeting here to elect their leader in the run up to formation of the next government.All-India Congress Committee treasurer Motilal Vora and secretary B K Hariprasad, in-charge of party affairs in Pondicherry, will address the meeting. The Congress-led Democratic Progressive Alliance won 20 out of the total 30 Assembly seats here. The Congress party won ten out of the 16 it contested. Its allies, the DMK won seven and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) two. The Communist Party of India (CPI) won one. The AIADMK combine won seven seats and three went to independents. Prominent among the Congress party winners are former chief minister V Vaithilingam, who won from Nettapakkam, for the sixth consecutive time. While Health Minister E Valsaraj, won the Mahe seat for the fifth time in a row. R Radhakrishnan of Congress party retained Kuruvinatham while DMKs R Rajaraman won the Embalam constituency. Rebel Congress candidate A Elumalai won from Oussudu constituency. Other Congress party winners are P Angalane (Thirubuvanai), A V Sridhar (Paloor) and Malladi Krishna Rao (Yanam). PMCs N Anand wrested the Bussy seat from DMK and former education minister K Lakshminarayanan retained Cassicade. Pondicherry too got into a coalition after a gap of six years with Congress-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) winning 20 of the 30 Assembly seats which went to polls on May 8. Pondicherry has traditionally been a Congress party stronghold. This former French colony had Assembly polls in two phases on May 3 and May 8 where 6.5 million voters exercised their franchise. (ANI)
