Jayalalitha government quits Chennai | May 12, 2006 1:15:28 AM IST
AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha quit Thursday evening along with her cabinet, admitting that her party had been defeated in the May 8 assembly elections.Jayalalitha, who had spent Wednesday in her Sirudavoor residence, about 50 km from the city, returned here in the afternoon as it became clear that there was no way that the AIADMK and its allies could cobble a majority in the 234-member house. Of the results declared, the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) got 161 and the AIADMK 68. A party needs at least 118 seats to form government. (IANS)
