Silence at Ammas Poes Garden, drumbeats at Karunanidhis Gopalpuram Chennai | May 11, 2006 12:17:17 PM IST
Drums have started beating at former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M.Karunanidhis Gopalpuram residence here and is expected to reach a resounding crescendo, as predictably the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) is heading for a landslide in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. In contrast, an eerie silence prevailed at the high-security Poes Garden residence of incumbent Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa, suggesting a bow to the inevitable loss of her All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Party (AIADMK)-led ruling alliance. Within hours of the first poll trend pouring in, DMK and allied supporters thronged Karunanidhis Gopalpuram residence, in a congratulatory mood, displaying victory signs to eager-beaver television camera crew and hassled print journalists, all vying for that key vantage point to get that all important sound byte. Karunanidhi and his son Stalin came out of their residence, people and media jostled to get a sound-bite of the leader, while media crews outside Poes Garden started thinning out. There was no sign of Tamil Nadus Amma or her close confidant Shashikala. Tamil Nadu election results are quite in sync with the latest exit poll predictions that gave DMK led Democratic Progressive Alliance a clear majority in the 234 member Assembly House. No sooner, the initial trends gave DMK the lead there was no doubt left that once again the voters of Tamil Nadu have rejected the incumbent Government in a decisive manner. Stalin was seen managing the leaders who started arriving at his fathers residence from morning for congratulating Karunanidhi for the alliances good performance. Colourful flowers and bouquets made beeline inside the leaders house and sweets in large trays were brought out to be distributed to the party workers and supporters of DMK . With smiles and cheers in every face of the people who had gathered around DMKs chief residence, it was evident that celebrations have just begun for DMK in Tamil Nadu and would continue for the next few days.
