The LDF is leading in majority of the remaining 83 seats in the 140-member Assembly.

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan was declared elected with a margin of 20,017 votes defeating his Congress-UDF rival Satheesan Pacheni in Malampuzha, while LDF convener and CPI(M) Central Committee member Paloli Mohammed Kutty won the Ponnani seat with a margin of 28,000 votes inflicting a humiliating defeat to Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader M P Gangadharan.

CPI(M) Central Committee members M A Baby (Kundara), Kodiyeri Balakrishnan (Thalassery) and P K Sreemathi (Payyannur), CPI state assistant secretary K E Ismail (Pattambi) were the other prominent leaders, who have secured clear lead over their UDF rivals.

The UDF suffered a shocking setback in the defeat of Agriculture Minister K R Gouri in Aroor where CPI(M) novice A M Arif was declared elected with a margin of 4,753 votes.

The defeat of Fisheries Minister Dominic Presentation was the other major reverse suffered by the UDF. He was humbled by CPI(M) state committee member and former Kochi Mayor C M Dinesh Mani by a margin of 6,258 votes in Palluruthy.

DIC(K) President K Muraleedharan (Koduvally) and its parliamentary party leader T M Jacob (Piravom), Former Minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai (Kottarakkara) were trailing behind their LDF rivals.

The BJP's hope to open account in the State Assembly was shattered when former Union Minister and senior leader O Rajagopal was relegated to the third position in Palakkad.
