Congress ahead, but spectre of hung Assembly looms large Guwahati | May 11, 2006 12:37:26 PM IST
The Congress bagged the sole seat declared so far and established an early lead, but yet Asom seemed to be heading towards a hung Assembly with the AGP catching up fast with the ruling party.Trends for about 70 seats were available, of which the Congress was leading in 38 seats, while the AGP in 20 seats. Baitahlangso Assembly seat went to the Congress, which it retained by a slender margin of 16 votes. Even as the Congress was ahead in several constituencies, the trend indicated that the party would not reach the magic figure alone or even with its partners and would have to take the help of smaller parties. The emergence of the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) both in lower Asom and Barak valley has taken both the Congress and BJP by surprise as the newly-formed party is set to play a crucial role in the post-poll scenario.
