Supreme court rejects early hearing on exit poll
New Delhi | April 21, 2006 10:15:06 PM IST

The Supreme Court Friday refused to fix an early date for hearing a petition challenging the opinion poll jointly conducted by CNN-IBN and The Hindu for the Kerala assembly elections.

A petition filed by a businessman from Kerala sought a direction to the central government and the Election Commission to restrain the print and electronic media from publishing/telecasting the exit polls Saturday, the day when the first round of the five-phase election is to be held.

But a three-judge bench comprising Justices Ruma Pal, C.K. Thakker and Markandey Katju declined an early date and said that the petition would come up for hearing in the normal course on May 5.

The petitioner, Benedict Bobby, said the poll surveys being published and telecast in the print and electronic media were confusing the people in the run-up to the assembly polls.

He said the CNN-IBN and The Hindu opinion poll was conducted among 3,000 to 4,000 people in Kerala, which had 140 assembly constituencies. This would mean that only about 20 to 30 people in each constituency took part in the survey, he pointed out.

He described the opinion poll as unscientific and said it was conducted even before a clear picture about the elections had emerged before the voters. (IANS)
