Border Security Forces on high alert ahead of second phase of elections in West Bengal siliguri | April 20, 2006 3:26:05 PM IST
The Border Security Forces (BSF) has stepped up surveillance along the Indo-Bangladesh border in poll-bound West Bengal ahead of the second phase of assembly polls in the state.Sixty-six out of a total 294 constituencies will go to polls on April 22, many of them lie along the international border with Bangladesh. The para-military Border Security Force (BSF) has beefed up security after outlawed rebel group Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) has threatened to disrupt the ongoing polls. Sukhjinder Singh Sandher, additional deputy inspector general (central) of BSF, North Bengal Frontier, said he had received inputs from intelligence sources that rebels belonging to KLO, who had received training at Chittagong hills across the border, had vowed to carry out attacks during the polls. While security had been put a high alert in all the sensitive regions of the state, day and night patrolling had especially been intensified along the border, said Sandher. "As for the border, we have taken additional measures to improve our border management or border domination. We have increased frequency of our foot patrolling during the day and also during the night. Foot patrolling and mounted patrolling on vehicles has been increased. All the unfenced area is kept under constant surveillance," said Sandher. The five-phase election started on April 17 in West Bengal. Polling for 3rd, 4th and 5th phases are scheduled to take place on April 27, May 3 and May 8 respectively. And the counting of Votes will take place on May 11. (ANI)
