EC observers arrive, fan out Chennai | April 19, 2006 4:38:23 PM IST
The poll scene is hotting up in Tamil Nadu with observers appointed by the Election Commission to ensure smooth conduct of the May eight Assembly elections, arriving here today.The poll panel had deputed observers for all 234 constituencies in the state, besides 50 Expenditure Observers, to closely monitor the election process in the state. Immediately after arrival, the observers, all IAS officers drawn from various states, proceeded to their respective areas by road. They were expected to commence work tomorrow. For Chennai district, with 14 Assembly constituencies, 14 general observers and three expenditure observers had been appointed. Meanwhile, filing nominations for the election is scheduled to close tomorrow. A total of 1,359 candidates had filed papers till yesterday. Scrutiny of nominations would be taken up on April 21 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature was April 24. UNI AKN AA RL HT1514
