Manmohan Singh seeks another term for UDF Perumbavoor (Kerala) | April 19, 2006 3:15:12 PM IST
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday asked voters in Kerala to give a second term to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) for the state''s prosperity."The UDF is a forward-looking alliance which has an impressive track record of removing poverty and unemployment. Allow them one more term because they have a vision and a strategy to make Kerala the knowledge hub of the country," Singh told his first election rally after arriving here. In his nearly half-hour speech, Singh did not utter a word about the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Giving reasons for re-electing the UDF, Singh said although the government had considerably developed the state''s infrastructure, it needed another five years to show results. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the central government had never been so considerate to Kerala, which he added received Rs.220 billion from the central government in the past one year. Chandy gave credit to the prime minister for developing Sabarimala, home to one of the holiest shrines for Hindus. Kerala''s staggered assembly elections begin Saturday. (IANS)
