Dalai Lama stable, may be discharged by end of week

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who underwent gall bladder surgery at a hospital in New Delhi last week, was in stable condition and is likely to be discharged by end of this week, his aide said here Tuesday. "He (the Dalai Lama) is recuperating well and doctors advised him to stay in the hospital for a few more days," Tenzin Taklha, a senior aide to the exiled leader, told IANS. The 73-year-old Nobel Laureate was admitted to Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Oct 9 for removing gallstones after he complained of abdominal pain. "The spiritual guru is likely to be discharged by the end of the week. Earlier, we were told by hospital authorities that he would be discharged today (Tuesday) but now the doctors have advised him bed rest for a few more days in the hospital," he said. On the Dalai Lama's scheduled programmes, Taklha said: "There is no change to his planned visit to Japan in November." The Buddhist leader has undergone repeated medical tests since August. He was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai twice in August after he complained of "abdominal discomfort". Recently, he cancelled some trips outside India due to exhaustion. The Dalai Lama travels around the world to speak on Buddhism. He has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959.
