'Slumdog Millionaire' named UK's most popular rental choice this year
London | November 30, 2009 3:46:44 PM IST

'Slumdog Millionaire' has emerged as the most popular rental choice for Brit film fans this year, a survey has revealed.

The poll by rental company Lovefilm found that the Oscar-winning movie was its customers' first choice for home viewing.

The Coen brothers' 'Burn After Reading' and Liam Neeson's thriller 'Taken' were the next most rented movies in the poll.

People were most likely to choose a drama for a night in on the sofa, with comedy a close second.

The survey also revealed that viewers were loyal to productions set in their home town-Edinburgh-based customers most likely to watch 'Trainspotting', Mancunians renting Tony Wilson biopic '24 Hour Party People' most often and 'The Full Monty' most popular with those in Sheffield, researchers found.

Abba's hit musical 'Mamma Mia!' seems to be the film most people want to watch again and again as it topped the chart for the most popular film purchase of 2009.

"Staying in has indeed become the new going out throughout 2009, but it has actually suited film fans down to the ground as they've been spoilt by some of the best films of the last few years," the Mirror quoted Fliss White, of Lovefilm as saying.

"Whilst Slumdog Millionaire was the real winner this year across the nation's homes, the success of comedies like the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading shows that despite the recession us Brits are more than able to look on the brighter side of life. We're also clearly a loyal bunch too, supporting locally based films like never before," he added. (ANI)
