Developed world responsible for climate change: Mukherjee
New Delhi |Tuesday, 2009 6:05:06 PM IST

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said India had differences with developed countries over funding to tackle climate change, but left it to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) to address the issue.

"There is a commitment that industrialised countries, which have committed this mistake over the years - not one year, two years but 200 years - will have to bear the responsibility," Mukherjee said.

"We could not agree on the funding of (tackling) climate change and have left it to the leaders and appropriate forum of UNFCC. They should adequately address the issue," the finance minister said at the World Economic Forum's India Economic Summit.

"The developed countries will have to keep in mind the approach which has been accepted and which is well established that the responsibility would be common but differentiated depending on the capability of the country concerned," Mukherjee said.

The finance minister also hoped that the outcome of the Copenhagen conference on climate change to be held next month would be "positive".
