As world faces hunger, G8 leaders feast in Japan
London | July 08, 2008 3:05:15 PM IST

A day after Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged Britain not to waste food, a disgusted British press dished out in great detail - with liberal servings of irony - the menu at the world's top table in Japan.

World leaders gathered in Japan to discuss food shortages were Monday night served an eight-course, 19-dish dinner prepared by 25 chefs.

"In a questionable public relations move, the summit's Japanese organisers proudly displayed to the press the menus for a sumptuous eight-course banquet laid on last night and a five-course lunch a few hours earlier," The Times reported.

The Guardian commented: "Not since (French queen) Marie Antoinette was supposed to have leaned from a Versailles palace window and suggested that the breadless peasants eat cake can leaders have demonstrated such insensitivity to daily hardship than at the luxury Windsor hotel on the Japanese island of Hokkaido."

The long G8 menu includes the following rare delectables: corn stuffed with caviar, smoked salmon and sea urchin 'bread surprise style', pink conger eel dressed with vinegar soy sauce, kelp-flavoured Kyoto beef shabu-shabu, hairy crab kegani bisque soup, salt-grilled bighand thornyhead (a small Pacific fish) with vinegary water pepper sauce, milk-fed lamb from Shiranuka, and the G8 fantasy dessert.

On Wednesday, each G8 leader will dine on a 200 pound (Rs.17,000) giant crab prepared by a French chef.

Before leaving for Japan Sunday, Gordon Brown urged his nation not to waste food as a government report said Britons were throwing away groceries worth one billion pounds a year.dds/sh/dg
