U.S. markets close mixed Tuesday New York | May 09, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
U.S. stock indexes closed mixed Tuesday, as investors seemed to be holding tight in anticipation of a U.S Federal Reserve announcement expected Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average ended lower Tuesday, down 39.81 points to 12,831.94, off 0.31 percent. The Standard and Poor's 500 index slid 5.43 points to 1,390.94, off 0.39 percent. The Nasdaq composite index gained on the day, up 1.70 points to 2,426.10, up 0.07 percent. On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,314 stocks advanced and 1,798 declined on a volume of 1.228 billion shares traded. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note gained 7/32 to yield 3.8 percent. The dollar was mixed. The euro traded at $1.5564 from Monday's $1.564, while the dollar traded at 104.055 yen from Monday's 104.19 yen. In Tokyo, the Nikkei index gained 30.90 points to 13,894.37, up 0.22 percent. In London, the FTSE 100 index lost 4.00 to 6,086.40, off 0.07 percent. (UPI)
