Pollution fears smother coastal fireworks San Diego | September 09, 2006 12:01:13 AM IST
Environmental concerns and a possible lawsuit against SeaWorld San Diego may force offshore fireworks displays in California to fizzle, not sizzle. An environmental group's threatened lawsuit prompted SeaWorld to nix its fireworks shows for the rest 2006, the Los Angeles Times said Saturday. And coastal cities wonder if greater scrutiny by state regulators would make displays too expensive to continue. SeaWorld has more than 120 fireworks displays shot annually from a barge in Mission Bay. San Diego Coastkeeper, concerned about the displays' collective effect on the bay, notified the amusement park of the group's intent to sue for violating the federal Clean Water Act and for not having the proper state permit, the newspaper said. In August, SeaWorld suspended its fireworks and said it planned to seek a discharge permit from the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, a park spokesman told the paper. A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, which shoots fireworks off Marina del Ray, said environmentalists' aggressive stance would make it difficult for agencies shooting offshore fireworks. Any new regulations that increased costs could end them, the spokesman told the newspaper. (UPI)
