DMRC makes deepest tunnel New Delhi | Thursday, Apr 30 2009 IST
In a major engineering achievement, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today successfully completed construction work of its deepest ever tunnel, built below the existing Metro tunnel at Rajiv Chowk, the central hub of the capital city. The breakthrough achieved today marked the completion of the deepest tunnel of the Delhi Metro, which has been built below the existing tunnel of Central Secretariat - Vishwavidyalaya line at Rajiv Chowk, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dyal said. The depth of the new tunnel, a part of the 22.7-km-long Airport Express Link, is 45 m and it is passes 20 to 25 m below the old tunnel. The construction of the tunnel, with a length of 1,556 m, started at the New Delhi Railway station in October last year. With today's breakthrough, about 24.3 km tunneling is now complete and only 11.7 km remains to be done for Phase II.
