Indian company pledges $2,00,000 for Clinton charity
New York | September 29, 2007 11:05:06 AM IST

At the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) here, Ajit Gulabchand, chairman and managing director of the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), presented a cheque for $200,000 to Bill Clinton, former US president and founder of CGI.

Clinton commended Gulabchand for supporting CGI, which brings together global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges. CGI is a Clinton Foundation project.

Gulabchand's contribution will be utilised by the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) in India.

Gulabchand told IANS: "I have been interacting with president Clinton for some years and have been associated with CGI since it was founded three years ago."

He said CGI is a new kind of initiative. "It is not charity. Nobody is a loser here."

Mumbai based HCC is a leading construction and infrastructure development company whose CSR (corporate social responsibility) projects focus on HIV/AIDS awareness, disaster relief and schools for special children.

HCC's partnership with CGI will help sharpen the impact of its CSR programmes. In turn, CHAI will position its HIV/AIDS educational programmes and medical support in and around HCC project sites, specifically in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the Sep 26-28 CGI meeting in New York, over $4 billion was pledged by companies for environmental, educational and humanitarian projects.

Clinton also honoured four "extraordinary individuals whose outstanding achievements have inspired change and made a positive impact on the world".

Among the four is Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee that has helped lift millions of people out of poverty through education, healthcare and micro finance programmes in Bangladesh.
