Shoaib's chucking controversy is over: Shahryar Karachi | June 02, 2006 2:17:18 PM IST
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shahryar Khan has said that the controversy regarding the country's fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was over after he got a clearance from the ICC a couple of years back, and that the PCB had received no fresh complaints suggesting that he chucked while his bowling."We believe that the episode related to Shoaib's chucking controversy is over. He has been cleared to bowl by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and would be playing for Pakistan in England if he regains full fitness. We have received nothing from the ICC or any other individual over Shoaib's action. And I don't expect to receive any complaint either because had it been an issue it would have been raised much earlier," The News quoted Khan as saying in an interview. The PCB chief also rejected speculations that Shoaib's current fitness problem was a facade created by the bowler to dodge international concerns over his action. Shaharyar's comments came after legendary West Indian fast bowler Andy Roberts was quoted as saying by the Indian media that Shoaib had a suspect action. Roberts also said he was not the only one to suspect Shoaib's action, adding that most of the world also thinks the same way. Roberts' comment had re-ignited the controversy that had been brewing up in international cricket. There has been a whispering campaign in the cricket circles that several match officials and umpires have been singling out Shoaib for his suspect action and are of the view that his faster deliveries are illegal and can be dangerous for batsmen facing him. There have also been rumours that the ICC had secretly written to the PCB that they should assure that Shoaib rectifies his action. The PCB chief said if Shoaib has an illegal action then he should have been reported by match officials after Pakistan won the Test series 2-0 against England at home last year when the pacer took 17 wickets or after the series against India earlier this year. The Rawalpindi Express is once again seen as a trump card for Pakistan in England this summer, a view that was also expressed by coach Bob Woolmer on Thursday. (ANI)
