Indian Minister urges reform in US export regime to promote hi-tech
Washington | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma has urged the United States to reform its export control regime to promote high-technology trade between the two countries. In his discussions with the US officials which ended here last night, he also raised the issues of restrictive American trade practices and visas for Indian professionals.

Talking to media persons yesterday, Sharma said he also discussed with US officials the arrangements for the visit of President Barack Obama to India scheduled for later this year. At his meeting with US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, he discussed cooperation in the field of agriculture that could be leveraged to strengthen agricultural productivity, and promote agro based industry in India.

In a follow up to the decision of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Obama announced in the Joint Statement issued at the end of the state visit to the US in November last. Mr Sharma and US Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Ron Kirk signed the India-US Trade Policy Forum Framework for Cooperation on Trade and Investment.

The Framework seeks to build on the success of the Trade Policy Forum by facilitating trade and investment flows between the United States and India.

The two Ministers also announced the launch of an initiative ''Integrating US and Indian Small Businesses into the Global Supply Chain.'' This initiative aims to expand trade and job-creating opportunities for US and Indian small and medium-sized companies.

Mr Sharma and the USTR also addressed a meeting of the reconstituted Private Sector Advisory Group (PSAG) to the Trade Policy Forum. The members of the PSAG were tasked to work as implementing partners for initiatives undertaken by the Trade Policy Forum, including the new small business initiative.
