Medvedev orders security forces to act tough against terror
Moscow | Friday, Jan 8 2010 IST

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev today ordered Russian security forces to maintain a tough line against militants and criminal groups in the North Caucasus region and eliminate them ''ruthlessly'' wherever they are discovered.

''As far as these criminals are concerned, our policy remains the same,'' Medvedev said during a meeting with Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russias Federal Security Service (FSB).

''They should simply be eliminated, and this must be done systematically. I would like the FSB, in cooperation with the Interior Ministry and other bodies, to deal with this,'' he added.

''Our task is to create normal living conditions in our southern republics (Russias North Caucasus),'' he said, stressing this meant social-economic development and the creation of new employment opportunities.

Bortnikov responded by expressing confidence that the system in place to fight militant groupings would continue to operate effectively.

Russia's North Caucasus republics, in particular, Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechnya, saw a sharp rise in militant activity in 2009.

Earlier this week, a suicide bomber killed seven police officials and injured 24 others in an attack in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan.

Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev today visited the site of the deadly suicide bombing in Makhachkala.

Makhachkala police chief Akhmed Magomedov told Nurgaliyev that all necessary measures were being taken to identify those involved in the attack.
