Maoist chairman holds secret meeting with Chinese officials
Kathmandu | Friday, Jan 8 2010 IST

Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a two-hour long secret meeting with senior Chinese officials during his one-day trip to Hong Kong, local newspaper reports said here today.

''Maoist chairman Dahal, who landed in Hong Kong yesterday morning, met a standing committee member of the Chinese Communist Party and senior Chinese government officials at an undisclosed location,'' Nagarik daily quoted Maoist cadres in Hong Kong as saying.

The daily said, ''the meeting dwelled mainly on Nepal's current political scenario.'' The name of the Chinese officials and the venue of the talks have been kept a secret, according to the daily.

Maoist foreign department chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara accompanied Dahal during the meeting.

Speaking to reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport on his return last night, Dahal confirmed that he met Hong-Kong based leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. He also said no Chinese leader came from Beijing specially for the meeting.

''Our visit was basically for internal purpose. We did meet political leaders in Hong Kong,'' Dahal said, adding, ''The Chinese side wished peace in Nepal, timely drafting of new constitution and political consensus.'' It is not clear whether he had met any Indian officials in Hong Kong during his visit as he had said he would hold direct talks with India as the Maoists consider the present government as 'puppet government', clearly referring to the Indian-supported government.
