World Prime Minister departs from Trinidad and Tobago
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh left here for home this evening after an eight day two nation tour of United States and Trinidad and Tobago. The Prime Minister had a bilateral meeting with US President Barack Obama at the White House in Washington on November 24 and represented India at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) at Port-of-Spain yesterday and today. The Prime Minister will fly to Geneva on way home and have a short stop over there before reaching New Delhi on Sunday night. In Port-of-Spain the Prime Minister also held a bilateral meetings with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several other leaders. The highlight of the visits to the two nations were a banquet hosted by US President Obama in Dr Singh's honour at the white house on November 24 and a bilateral meeting between the two leaders. This was the first State visit as well as the State banquet under the Obama administration. During the bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Harper, the two leaders agreed to negotiate a civilian nuclear agreement, signifying a landmark development in Indo Canadian bilateral relations. During the bilateral meetings with President Sarkozy and Mr Brown, the three leaders agreed that there should not be any double standard in combating terror, in an apparent reference to Pakistan. The Prime Minister described the visits as ''very successful'' saying he felt ''proud of being an Indian''.
