Iran justifies taking away Ebadis Nobel medal
Dubai | Saturday, Nov 28 2009 IST

Iran lambasted Norway for criticising Tehran for confiscating the Iranian Shirin Ebadis Nobel peace prize medal saying it amounted to meddling in Irans internal affairs.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran Roald Naess was summoned to Foreign Ministry in Tehran yesterday to be informed of Irans protest at Norways anti-Iran gesture, Iranian press reported. Iran claimed Ebadis medal was confiscated for tax evasion and her refusal to abide by tax commitments under illogical justifications.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said yesterday he was "shocked and concerned" by the move. "This is the first time a Nobel Peace Prize has been confiscated by national authorities." Iran protested to the Norwegian Ambassador over the Foreign Ministers 'baseless' charges and justified the Iranian position over what it described as the violation of Irans taxation laws by Ms Ebadi and her refusal to show up at court and pay taxes. Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer, had earlier claimed authorities acting on orders from Tehran's Revolutionary Court, have taken away her peace prize medal and her Legion of Honor. She claimed the authorities also seized a ring awarded to her by a German association of journalists and froze all the bank accounts of her husband and herself.
