Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) | Saturday, Nov 28 2009 IST

India has underscored the importance of transfer of technology from developed countries to developing ones and conveyed to France and the UK that the move would help them in ''mitigation and adaptation'' on the critical issue of climate change.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who held bilateral meetings with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Premier Gordon Brown here on the sidelines of the ongoing Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) last night, told them ''very clearly'' that India would like to see a balanced, ambitious and equitable outcome of the Copenhagen Summit.

External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash told reporters here that the three leaders also agreed there should be no ''double standards on (fight against) terrorism,'' apparently referring to Pakistan.

Mr Brown expressed sympathy with the victims of the last year's Mumbai attack. Both, Dr Singh and Mr Brown, said the perpetrators of the terror attack must be brought to justice.

They also discussed the civil nuclear energy.

The meeting with the French President lasted about an hour while that with the British Prime Minister went on for 40 minutes. Dr Singh also invited President Sarkozy to visit India next year.

The issues of terrorism and situation in Afghanistan also came up during the discussions.

Mr Prakash said the primary focus of the talks was Climate Change and the expectations from the Copenhagen Summit.

India was very clear in conveying to both leaders that it would like to see a balanced, ambitious and equitable outcome of the Copenhagen Summit, the spokesman said.

The leaders said it was in India's interest to see a successful outcome at Copenhagen.

The Prime Minister conveyed to the two leaders that developing countriess should be taken into account while discussions are held at Copenhagen.

The situatoin in Afghanistan and Pakistan was also discussed at the meetings.
