Obama calls for 'finishing' al Qaida and its allies
Washington | Wednesday, Nov 25 2009 IST

United States President Barack Obama today said Pakistan was acting against terrorism and there would be further clarity and determination in Islamabad's actions (against terror) in the coming days.

Speaking at a joint press conference alongwith Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after their hour-long talks at the White House, President Obama called for ensuring that al Qaida and its allies 'were ''finished.'' He said the US had a unifocal approach towards Pakistan, mostly focussing on civil aspects. ''Now we realise the importance of strengthening Pakistan's civil society,'' he said in response to a question on US aid to Pakistan and its suspected diversion for anti-India activities.

Dr Singh called for defeating the forces of terrorism which posed a grave threat to the entire civilised world.

Both leaders had decided to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, Dr Singh said.

The US President said there was a recognition in Pakistan that extremism could only be harmful even if it was targeted against somebody else initially.

He said Pakistan was taking a lot of action in Swat and everybody had seen it.
