World International terror network to be high on Indo-US talks agenda
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left this morning on a four-day state visit to the United States after an overnight technical halt here. The Prime Minister, who arrived here yesterday, is on a nine-day visit to the United States and Trinidad and Tobago where he will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) from November 27 to November 29 at Port of Spain. According to sources, the Prime Minister during his US visit will sign a Counter-Terrorism Initiative to strengthen cooperation against global terror. The arrest by Italian police of Pakistani father-son duo who are suspected to be involved in the Mumbai terror attacks,(they are said to have transferred money to activate an Internet phone account that was used by the Mumbai terror attackers and their handlers), and other issues relating to international terror network were likely to figure in the talks with Dr Singh and President Obama. As per the Counter-terror Initiative, the US will give sophisticated equipment which will enable Indian security agencies to pinpoint the exact location of a cellphone being used by terrorists. The sources said the US is also likely to disclose the name of a senior Pakistani official who was involved in 26/11 attacks besides David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana. However, the sources did not disclose the name but merely said he was a Pakistani. Meanwhile, National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan had a meeting with CIA Chief Leon Baneta in New Delhi yesterday, during which terrorism and situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan were discussed. The sources said during the meeting, the CIA Chief expressed fears that there could be a surge in Taliban activities in Afghanistan and the US and NATO troop strength would be ''substantially increased.'' On Pakistan, the CIA Chief was very candid and said the US was very much concerned at the situation in that country. He said Pakistan had done a good job in South Waziristan but the US was not sure about North Waziristan. The CIA Chief also told the NSA that Pakistan was committed to fighting all forms of terrorism. He, however, was not sure about terrorism against India. On 26/11 attacks, the sources said the CIA Chief admitted that ''some elements'' of the ISI were involved but was not sure about the ISI. The NSA conveyed India's position on 26/11. ''Our take on 26/11 has been conveyed to the US earlier. It is very well known to the US,'' the sources added.
