Musharraf fears Sharif would make his life 'miserable' if he replaces Zardari
Islamabad | November 07, 2009 2:09:24 PM IST

Pakistan's current turbulent political scenario seems to have the former President General Pervez Musharraf worried.

Musharraf wants President Asif Ali Zardari to continue on the post as he fears that if Nawaz Sharif manages to climb the ladder to power, then the PML-N chief would make his life 'miserable' and leave no stone unturned to target him.

It was primarily due to this apprehension that Musharraf had sent former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to Abu Dhabi to broker talks between the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the MQM.

The talks, which were held at the same hotel in Abu Dhabi where the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was conceived by Benazir Bhutto and Musharraf in January 2007, however, failed to yield any substantial result, The News reports.

The MQM remains unmoved from its stance demanding Zardari's immediate resignation inorder to save democracy.

The party, maintaining its strong reservations over the NRO, has made it clear that it would not vote in favour the controversial legislation under any circumstances, and that Zardari should give the sacrifice needed to save the system.

According to sources, the PPP tried its best to involve a regional or an international guarantor in the issue, but none was available.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, however, claimed that the talks have been successful, as the MQM has agreed to come on board.

Rehman also rejected reports that he had deliberately run out of the country, saying he would be back in the country on Saturday (today). (ANI)
