Iranian port rocked, 700 injured (Lead)
Tehran |Wednesday, 2009 5:05:08 PM IST

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale shook the southern Iranian port town of Bandar Abbas Wednesday and left injured at least 700 people, state media reported.

The quake occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday and led to technical problems in the city such as power cuts and telephone outages, state television reported.

The official IRNA news agency reported most of those injured have already left the hospitals but some 80 people, most of them elderly, remained hospitalised as a precautionary measure.

The US Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 4.8, saying it occurred at 2.56 a.m. (2326 GMT Tuesday).

There have been no reports of fatalities so far.
