Maoists capture municipality in eastern Nepal
Kathmandu | Tuesday, Nov 3 2009 IST

Maoist cadres have captured the Dhankuta municipality in eastern Nepal and appointed office-bearers of the municipality, including the mayor and the deputy mayor, local media reports said here today.

''After capturing the municipality, the Maoist party declared that its team would look after the entire matter with the municipality,'' Nepalnews reported.

According to the report, the Maoist party declared Ganesh Bista as the mayor of the municipality and Kabita Rai as deputy mayor. They also appointed the chairmen in 9 wards of the municipality. This was the first time that Maoists have declared officials of the local bodies since they came to the peace process in 2006.

Maoists have been protesting across the country saying, they will ''establish civilian supremacy.'' The rebel party was protesting against the non-implementation of their decision to sack then Army chief Rookmangud Katawal, who retired two months ago. Katawal was sacked by the Maoist government, but the president had refused to implement that decision at the request of 18 political parties represented in the parliament.
