Israel declares Iran 'existential threat' Jerusalem | February 16, 2009 12:01:13 AM IST
Israel's military chief says the country is under an existential threat from Iran's near-nuclear capabilities. Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi says in a report to Defense Minister Ehud Barak that Iran is a threat to Israel's existence, the first time in years an Israeli military leader has made such as assessment about a foe, Ynetnews.com reported Monday. In the outline of the IDF's annual work plan for 2009, Ashkenazi reportedly says the Iranian threat is made up of its nearly-obtained nuclear capabilities, its existing ballistic missiles and the funding of terrorist acts by proxies such as the Palestinian militant groups Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. By declaring Iran an existential threat, the Israeli military will focus its funding on strategic airborne capabilities, such as remote-piloted drone vehicles, as well as on new investments in its infrastructures for intelligence and communications systems, Ynetnews.com said.
