Bigfoot fans gather in Pennsylvania
Jeannette, Pa. | September 26, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST

A conference for Bigfoot enthusiasts in Pennsylvania includes a tour of at least four spots in the area where the man-like beast has supposedly been sighted.

While Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is commonly associated with the Pacific Northwest, about 250 reports have come in from Pennsylvania in the past 10 years.

Eric Altman of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society has organized this weekend's gathering in Jeannette, a town about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. He expects between 300 and 500 people, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reported.

The Bigfoot legend goes back to the Indians of the northwest, and similar creatures have been reported from every continent except Australia. Bigfoot is generally described as a large bipedal ape.

One 2006 encounter involved members of the society who found large footprints and found what Sean Forker of Williamsport describes as a make-do shelter. They marked the spot and returned an hour later to find the shelter destroyed.

Forker said he is still uncertain about the existence of Bigfoot, since he chased something he heard crashing through the woods -- but never actually saw it.
