Swimmer completes 352-mile river journey Pittsburgh | August 23, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
Katie Spotz says she was too slow to star on her Mentor, Ohio, swimming team but endurance I can do -- like the entire length of the Allegheny River. Spotz, 21, showed she could indeed do endurance by completing a 352-mile journey swimming the entire length of the Allegheny River for her pet charity project, finishing just before noon Thursday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said. She is believed to be the first person to swim the whole river. Spotz was greeted by cheering friends and family as she approached Point State Park, where the Allegheny and Monongahela form the Ohio,. followed by her safety kayaker, James Hendershott. Spotz said she wore a wet suit and used flippers, swimming for about six to eight hours a day. On her longest day, she said, she swam about 22 miles. On her last day, she swam about a mile. She often camped out overnight. She said she swam to raise money and awareness for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, a non-profit whose goal is to bring clean drinking water to the estimated 1 billion people worldwide who lack it. Next, Spotz plans to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, some 2,500 miles from West Africa to South America, in December for Blue Planet. (UPI)
