Arrest in 1991 'Point Break' robbery Saugatuck, Mich. | May 17, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A man accused of robbing a Michigan bank 17 years ago in a style reminiscent of the surfer film Point Break has been arrested, investigators say. Former FBI investigator Eugene Debbaudt, who investigated the 1991 robbery for nearly 10 months, alleged that Carmine Jannece's plan to use masks of former U.S. presidents just like in Break was only part of a more sophisticated plan, the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press said Friday. They planned it for months. They did dry runs to make sure they had it right, Debbaudt said of Jannece's alleged robbery crew. I have nothing but disdain for criminals who put people's lives at risk, but there were some who admired the work they did. While three other men were convicted 12 years ago on related charges, Debbaudt said the 84-year-old escaped and wasn't caught until this year. The Press said, according to Jannece's son, the alleged bank robber was only caught after running into problems renewing his driver's license. (UPI)
