Russia, India, China seek anti-terrorism cooperation within UN
Moscow | Thursday, May 15 2008 IST

The Foreign Ministers of Russia, India and China at their eight trilateral meeting in the Russia's Urals city of Yekaterinburg have agreed to work out a common position towards international terrorism, within the framework of the UN and other regional organisations. ''The Ministers agreed that elaboration of a common position in the field of counteracting new challenges and threats within the framework of the United Nations is of particular importance,'' a joint communiqu issued at the outcome of the meeting said.

The joint communiqu supported 'zero tolerance' approach against international terrorism, sought by Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee from their Russian and Chinese counterparts Sergei Lavrov and Yang Jiechi, at the two-day meeting on May 14-15.

Mr Mukherjee also informed his counterparts about the devastating terrorist serial bomb blasts in the Pink City of Jaipur, which killed many people.

''They expressed their confidence that their anti-terrorism cooperation should be actively supported both within the framework of the UN system and regional organisations,'' the communiqu said. ''They also called upon all member states to comply with relevant international terrorism conventions and related protocols, and the Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism,'' it added. ''While supporting the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy the ministers emphasised that all member states should make concerted efforts towards expeditious finalisation of Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the UN,'' it noted. ''They reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation among their countries to combat terrorism,'' it said.
