Tornadoes kill at least 9 in Okla., Mo. Picher, Okla. | May 11, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
Tornadoes churned through Oklahoma and Missouri Saturday, killing at least nine people, authorities said. Five people died when a twister hit Picher, Okla., the Tulsa World reported. Three fatalities were reported in Newton County, Mo., when a tornado touched down between Seneca and Neosho, KOAM-TV in Pittsburg, Kan., reported. The National Weather Service said one person died east of Carthage when a tree landed on a mobile home, the TV station said. Houses were destroyed, power lines were knocked down, gas lines were ruptured and authorities were reported to be blocking access to Picher in northeastern Oklahoma, which was hit by a tornado shortly after 5:15 p.m., the World reported. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said first-responders were working to free victims trapped in the rubble in Picher. An emergency treatment site was set up south of town for anyone injured in the storm. Several tornadoes and severe storms were being blamed for damage reported in and around Cardin, Peoria, Arpelar, Bache, McAlester, Hawsthorne and Yanush. (UPI)
