Lost family lit sled on fire to lure plane Repulse Bay, Nunavut | May 11, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A Canadian family lost in the Arctic burned half its sled in an unsuccessful effort to signal a search plane but was eventually tracked down and rescued. Mona and Mariano Susaarnak and their five children were rescued by Canadian Rangers who found their abandoned snowmobile and the charred portion of their sled and followed their tracks. The couple were using the remaining half of their sled to pull their children, Canwest News Service reported. The Susaarnaks left Repulse Bay in Nunavut May 1 for the 150-mile trip to Hall Beach, where they planned to visit relatives. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they took a wrong turn and then ran out of gas. Due to inclement weather conditions, they became disoriented. Since the family had 40 gallons of fuel and a two-day amount of food, they were forced to ration, the RCMP said in a news release. At first, the couple set up camp and waited for rescue. Once they were unable to attract the search plane, they decided to try for Hall Beach on foot. They were rescued a week after they set out. (UPI)
