Police officer asked for tasty reward Lund, Sweden | October 11, 2007 12:01:13 AM IST
A police officer in Sweden has been convicted of trying to get a theft victim to reward police with a savory tart once the case was solved. The officer, a 38-year veteran of the force in Lund, said he was unaware he acted illegally in asking the owner of the missing trombone to purchase the pastry delicacy -- a cake dish made from sandwich ingredients that also is known as a smorgastarta, The Local reported Wednesday. I told him that's how it usually worked internally, that the head of a preliminary investigation would offer to buy a savory tart for the working group that solved a case, the officer, who was convicted on bribery charges, said in Lund District Court. I didn't feel under obligation but his tone was very insistent and we had already agreed after all, said Magnus Johnson, the owner of the instrument. If that sort of thing generally helps then I didn't want my case to drop down the list of priorities. The missing trombone was recovered and Johnson made good on the deal, but the officer never got a bite of the dish -- it was purchased on his day off. (UPI)
