Muslim, Jewish leaders unite at convention Chicago | September 03, 2007 12:01:13 AM IST
An Islamic Society of North America convention in Illinois has given leaders of the Muslim and Jewish communities a chance to reconcile their differences. Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie of the Union for Reform Judaism spoke at the annual Islamic conference Friday and was welcomed with repeated applause from the assembled group of the nation's Muslim leaders, The Indianapolis Star said Sunday. After being met with such enthusiasm, Yoffie said his view of ISNA has changed dramatically thanks to its new leaders. The message that they give is a message of moderation and cooperation and outreach to Jews and to others, Yoffie said. We are here because they set the tone. Our natural allies are other faith communities who share similar interests and concerns, ISNA President Ingrid Mattson said in response. The Star said based on the success of the conference, Yoffie suggested his 1.5 million-member congregation could meet with ISNA members to increase understanding and tolerance. (UPI)
